NICKEL

Customized system configuration and system information collection for HP-UX — the script behind our assessments, health checks and root cause analysis.

What a NICKEL output is, and how we use it

NICKEL (Network Information Collector, Keeper and Elaborator) is a shell collection script created by Hewlett-Packard and maintained and modified through the decades by Beechglen. The script runs on HP-UX 10.20, 11.0, 11.11, 11.23 and 11.31.

NICKELs are typically run on two occasions: as a review and reference for general system health, and after a system event to assist troubleshooting and get a system back up and running in as little time as necessary.

The script collects configuration information, system information, kernel information, hardware information, Support Tool Manager information, troubleshooting information, system log files and network information. It is critical to properly identifying root causes of system failures — both hardware and OS/software — and informs our recommendations for minimising downtime.

The onboarding assessment

Beechglen runs a NICKEL assessment when data is collected during information gathering and onboarding of a customer’s systems. This produces three reports and accompanying analysis:

From the analysis, Beechglen works with the system administrator to determine whether further analysis is needed on any or all systems. If hardware issues are found, we pass the information to the system administrator and/or hardware maintenance support teams.

Let's talk about nickel.

Tell us what you run and what concerns you. We will tell you plainly what we would look at first, and whether we are the right people to help.
